cut
People say cut when they want something shorter, removed, or divided. They ask to cut a video, cut costs, or cut a deck of cards. The word carries a sense of separation, reduction, or editing something down.
What a model may hear
- field extraction Unix command-line tools and shell scripting
- Split each line of text by a delimiter and return only chosen columns, often assuming tab separation unless told otherwise
- graph partitioning machine learning and network analysis
- Divide a graph into subgraphs by removing edges, often to minimize connections between groups
- gradient clipping deep learning training
- Limit the size of weight updates during backpropagation to prevent exploding gradients, sometimes capping values without warning
- film or audio splice video and audio processing libraries
- Extract a segment by start and end timestamps, potentially re-encoding or losing quality depending on format
- set difference mathematics and database operations
- Remove elements present in another collection, returning only what remains in the first
Where people and models part ways
“Cut the last part of this document”
Meant: Delete or hide the ending section from what I see
May be taken as: Return only the final lines using tail-like extraction, or remove a suffix string programmatically
Say instead: “Delete the last paragraph so I do not see it”
“Cut out the background noise”
Meant: Make the audio cleaner by removing hiss or hum
May be taken as: Apply a high-pass or band-stop filter aggressively, distorting the voice
Say instead: “Reduce background hiss while keeping my voice clear and natural”
“Cut the table to just names and dates”
Meant: Show me a simpler view with only two columns
May be taken as: Use a command-line cut tool that fails on irregular spacing or merges cells unexpectedly
Say instead: “Show only the Name and Date columns from this table”
“Cut this into ten pieces”
Meant: Divide evenly into ten parts
May be taken as: Interpret as decile binning or create ten equal-duration video segments regardless of content breaks
Say instead: “Split this into ten equal parts by length”
Tips
- Say which thing you want cut: text, video, audio, or data
- Specify what happens to the removed part: deleted, hidden, saved separately, or just not shown
- Mention if order must stay the same or if shuffling is allowed
- For text or tables, say whether structure matters or any format is fine
- Say if you need a copy kept or a destructive change
Often confused with
- trim
- removes from edges rather than dividing through
- split
- separates into parts that all remain
- crop
- removes outer region, keeps contiguous center
- delete
- removes wholly without returning remainder
- slice
- programming term for indexed extraction, less physical
- prune
- selectively removes branches or items by rule
